You bring the Hymnal, I'll bring the History

How many of you have ever been involved in a Christmas program and had a hard time finding just the perfect hymn for the evening. In the Church of St. Nicholas up in the snowy Alps, Joseph Mohr was also in need of the perfect hymn for his Christmas eve service. And to make matters worse the church organ was not working. Not finding a suitable hymn already in print he went and composed his own, "Silent Night, Holy Night." He took the composition to his church organist, Franz Gruber, and the music was finished in time for Christmas. Together, Mohr and Gruber sang their new hymn, accompanied by a guitar, on Christmas eve. The congregation was stirred as people down through the ages have been stirred by this simple yet excellent Christmas hymn.

Silent night! Holy night! All is calm,
All is bright round yon virgin mother and Child,
Holy Infant, so tender and mild--sleep in heavenly peace,
sleep in heavenly peace.
Silent night holy night! Shepherds quake at the sight;
Glories stream from heaven afar;
Heav'nly hosts sing Allelluia--Christ the Savior is born!
Christ the Savior is born.
Silent night! Holy night! Son of God,
Love's pure light radiant beams from Thy holy face with the dawn
of redeeming grace--
Jesus, Lord at Thy birth,
Jesus, Lord at Thy birth
