There are many hymns that are so old that their histories are unknown. The history of “Good Christian Men, Rejoice,” reaches back to the 14th century. It was originally in Latin. In 1601 Batholomaeus Gesius adapted the music and called it, “With Sweet Shouting.” Bach arranged it for organ and John Sterner also did a choral version of this hymn. John Mason Neale standardized the hymn in English. Many different language groups have added to this old Latin hymn to make it the beautiful Christmas hymn we enjoy today.
